Working on it...

This past weekend was great.  We had no expectations, plans, or commitments to anyone.  While we were somewhat hermits, we accomplished quite a bit around the house.  In the previous post I decided to set some goals.  I think this is a great way for me to publish that I WANT to do these things and that it may hold me more accountable to do them in a timely manner.

1.  Our master bath trim (around the closets and door way to the shower/toilet).  We had previously taken the doors down from the closets and the lock portion out of the trim (from the pocket door) and filled in with wood filler.  It sat sanded for a good while (eeek.... about 3 months).  On our trip to Lowes on Saturday we purchased Valspar's High Gloss paint in Ultra Bright White.  Once I started painting and seeing just how much brighter, crisper, and glossy it looked I was in love.

No more wood filler spots.... but since I did this trim last...and because I'm shorter than the top.... I got a little paint on the wallpaper.  T pointed this out the next day.  I'm not heartbroken because I wanted to take it down anyhow - now I just have an excuse :)

The spot where the pocket door lock is MUCH better, Will probably need a second coat just to be sure.

This picture was supposed to show how the new white paint is SO much brighter white, but doesn't do it justice.  (Take my word for it!)

2.  The nightstand project was pushed off to hopefully complete during the week.  I hate that it didn't happen but when we started other projects around that needed to be done this one fell onto the back burner.  (Promise it will be done this week).  While I was thinking, is it weird to put certain things in a nightstand?  I mean its not one of "our" nightstands so I figured using this for storage was perfectly acceptable.... not like we have long house guests that stay long enough to unpack anything.

3.  When we went to hang the mirror, we realized that the cabinet in the guest bath had swatches on it for the past month.  We decided to finally paint it a more modern color that flows with the houses color scheme than to leave it the splotchy dark 1970's stain.  We will be back later this week to share the process we used and the finish product.  I thought it may be best to let everything have an extra day to fully dry before we put anything back together.  in the mean time I'll leave you with this before/in process picture.
***Still not finished - while the hinges matched exactly, we did not think about the flush/inset cabinets.... back to Lowes tonight.

Hello 1978 cabinet, you need a makeover!

Other view of the cabinet

These were the two samples we were considering.  We decided against both...

The hinges are original.  They all have corrosion, paint, and stain on them.

4.  T must have been feeling better (or maybe anxious from it taunting him for three days) because when I got home from the gym on Friday the box was empty.  The mystery box contained our new receiver.  To many women this is a term that we could care less about.... but I ended up agreeing that a new one was in order.  Our previous receiver was one that I had since I was 15 years old.  In our new house we have it connecting our media to our surround sound in our living room.  The issue was that I had given T outdoor speakers for Valentine's Day and he had been using an older stereo to route the music through (which was placed beside our media stand in the living room).  The new receiver has many more fancy options that I wish I fully understood, what I can tell you is that it allows the audio to operate in the living room as well as outside the the old stereo that sat next to our media stand is now gone!!!!  (I was SO EXCITED to come home and see this already completed I couldn't jumped up and down - but I was exhausted from the gym).

Tada... Ignore my body bar and the shelf that had to be taken out.
In our last place we had painted the back lime green, eventually I will probably paint this yellow.

5.  The light switches.... sigh.  This seemed like such an easy task.  We have already replaced several in throughout our house.  While I was busy prepping the guest bath cabinet T was going to tackle the light switches.  He took it off and immediately found a problem.  Someone before us had "rigged" the light over top of the sink to run off one of the switches.  This is fine except that the light was shorting out... by no means are we electricians.  We decided to let it be until my dad came up for a visit.  While he isn't an electrician either, he does know it.  I figured it could be my birthday present - for him to come up and fix our rigged electrical work in the kitchen :)  Hopefully he can show Tyler how to fix it so if we run into this problem again we will know how to correctly fix the issue.
Surprises we found

Extra Credit:  We found the motivation to clean up the side of our house that had not been touched in at least a year or two.  While we were at Lowes

These projects are all part of owning a 33 year old home - for the most part we embrace it... we may say a few words from time to time, but we are more than excited to have something that we can work on together.

  1. I love fixing up older houses! I feel like it gives you a little more freedom to try what you want. The trim looks fantastic, it's amazing how nice it makes a home look!
